Amherst, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team was staring adversity in the face for the first time all season on Sunday afternoon. It had to go on the road to take on a very good UMass team just 24 hours after a heartbreaking loss to No. 1 Maryland. The Eagles not only overcame the adversity by beating the Minutemen 2-1, but they did it in thrilling fashion.

With the win the Eagles move to 7-1 for the season, while the loss will drop UMass to 5-2.

The first half was a defensive struggle as scoring opportunities were extremely hard to come by, which left the game scoreless at halftime. The two teams combined for only 10 shots in the first half, with Boston College holding a 3-2 edge in the penalty corners.

The second half was more of the same until the 50th minute when UMass's Nicole Cordero scored her first goal of the season to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead.

UMass maintained the lead until the 62nd minute when Boston College got on the board on a goal from Chelsey Feole off a pass from Catherine O'Brien to tie the score at 1-1.

Both sides had chances late in the second half, but couldn't capitalize, which led to overtime.

Just five minutes into the first overtime Janna Anctil tipped a pass from Caitlin McGovern into the back of the net to give BC the win.

Boston College goalie Kristine Stigas had a phenomenal game registering 14 saves, including 13 in the second half.

The Eagles will have a week off before they travel to the University of Virginia on Sunday, September 27 to resume their ACC schedule. The game will start at 1 p.m.
