No. 17 Field Hockey Edges Michigan State, 1-0 in Season Opener
Aug. 24, 2012
Orono, Maine - Virgynia Muma's third career goal at the 3:50 mark of the first half proved to be enough as the Eagles edged the Michigan State Spartans 1-0 at the University of Maine.
The Eagles held the Spartans in check for most of the game allowing only one shot on freshman goalkeeper Leah Settipane in her collegiate debut.
Muma cashed in early as she put back a rebound just inside the right post past Spartans goaltender Molly Cassidy to give BC a lead they would not relinquish.
Muma and sophomore Emma Plasteras led the way with two shots on goal while Abby Barker had the lone shot on goal for the Spartans.
"A great start to the season with a win vs. a talented MSU team," said head coach Ainslee Lamb. "The players made some key adjustments from our scrimmages this past weekend that positioned the team to attack and defend better as an entire group. The game also helped us recognize some critical areas that we will look to improve on."
The Eagles are back at it again tomorrow against Maine when they look to avenge last season's 4-3 overtime loss. Game time is set for 1PM.
The Eagles outshot Michigan State 7-0 in the first and 9-2 for the game ... penalty corners: BC 5, MSU 2 ... Cards: 3 for BC (2 green, 1 yellow) and 1 for MSU (green) ... this was the first meeting between the two teams since the first round of the 2004 NCAA Tournament (4-0 MSU win).
