Boston College Field Hockey To Battle Rutgers For BIG EAST Tournament Berth
Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College field hockey team faces the biggest game of its season on Friday, October 31 when it entertains BIG EAST rival Rutgers. The winner of the game will earn the final berth in the 1997 BIG EAST Tournament, which will be held at BC's Alumni Stadium on November 8-9.
Both teams enter the game with 2-2 records in league play. Connecticut (3-1), Providence (3-2) and Syracuse (3-1) have already qualified for the four-team tournament.
Overall, the Eagles are 12-6 and ranked #18 in the latest NCAA Division I Poll. The Eagles are coming off a 4-0 victory over New Hampshire on October 29 at Alumni Stadium. BC has an impressive 8-1 home record this fall. The Eagles have now recorded 10+ wins in each of the last four seasons.
Junior tri-captain Anne Marie Ambros (Bridgeton, N.J.) had two assists in the win over UNH, increasing her season total to 18, the second-highest among all BIG EAST players. Freshman goalkeeper Stacy Cichaski (Northampton, Mass.) had four saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
After 18 games, senior Andrea Durko (Briarcliff, N.Y.) leads the team in scoring with 25 points (10g, 5a). Classmate Marion Fitzgerald (Little Silver, N.J.) is close behind with 20 points (10g, 0 a).
Rutgers is also 12-6 on the season. The Scarlet Knights defeated Ursinus, 5-0, on October 29. Senior forward Heather Sams had two goals and two assists in victory. For the season, Senior back Jessica Pizzulli leads the team with 25 points (12g, 1a).
Since 1995, the year Rutgers joined the BIG EAST, the two schools have met three times. Rutgers won both meetings in 1995 (2-0 on 10/28 and 2-1 on 11/5). Last season, the Eagles defeated the Scarlet Knights, 4-1, in Brunswick, N.J. Durko (two goals) and Ambros (two assists) were the Eagle standouts in the victory.
