Field Hockey Duo Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two members of the Boston
College field hockey team earned weekly honors from the BIG
EAST Conference for their fine performances last week. Senior
back Marion Fitzgerald (Little Silver, N.J.) was named as the
Offensive Player of the Week and junior back Anne Marie Ambros
(Bridgeton, N.J.) earned Defensive Player accolades.
Fitzgerald scored four goals in two Eagle victories during the
week. In 70 prior games, Fitzgerald had scored just four
goals. On Wednesday, Fitzgerald's career-high three goals (all
in the first half) propelled Boston College to a 5-0 shutout
victory over Rhode Island. On Saturday, Fitzgerald scored one
goal to help the Eagles defeat 12th-ranked Duke, 4-2.
In addition to providing her usual steady defense, Ambros
assisted on seven of the Eagle's nine goals for the week.
Against URI, Ambros had a career-high four assists, the most
for an Eagle since Paula Boukavalas had four in a victory over
Georgetown on September 19, 1993. Ambros added three more
assists in the victory over Duke to increase her season total
to 12, the second among all BIG EAST players.
It is the second time this season that two Boston College
players were honored in the same week. In week four (Sept.
22), Ambros (Defensive) and junior Joy Ramsbotham (Melvin
Village, N.H.), who earned Offensive Player of the Week honors,
were both recognized.
Winners of three consecutive games, Boston College is 8-4, 2-1
in the BIG EAST. The Eagles will travel to Storrs, Conn. on
Wednesday, October 15 to face the Huskies of Connecticut at 7
p.m. On Friday, October 17, Boston College will host Stanford
at Alumni Stadium (7:30 p.m.).
