BC Fencing Gives Strong Effort against Stiff Competition at Brandeis

Dec. 6, 2011

Boston College women's fencing picked up two wins while the men's team dropped all four of its matches at the Brandeis Invitational hosted by Brandeis University on Sunday in BC's first team meet of the season.

The women's side beat UNC and Yale on the strength of its sabre squad which went 9-0 against Yale and a young foil squad which contributed seven wins against UNC. Leading the way were junior Olivia Curry who went 10-4 in sabre and freshman Ryan Western who was 9-6. The team posted losses to St. Johns, Cornell and Brown.

The men's team got off to a rocky start with its closest match coming against Brown, in which the Eagles dropped a 15-12 decision. The men's side also lost to St. John's, UNC, and Yale.

"It's a young team," head coach Syd Fadner said of the men's team. "Six of our nine starters are freshmen or sophomores. As the season progresses I expect our results to improve with increased experience."

The Eagles return to action after the Christmas Break with a home meet at Boston College's Flynn Recreation Complex against Northeast Fencing Conference competition on January 28.
