Boston College center Carolyn Swords is one of 30 candidates named to the 2010-11 preseason Women's John R. Wooden Award today as announced by Richard "Duke" Llewellyn, John R. Wooden Chairman and founder. This list is comprised of 30 studentathletes who, based on last year's individual performance and team records, are the frontrunners for one of college basketball's prestigious honors.
Swords, a native of Sudbury, MA, led Boston College in scoring (14.5 ppg.) and rebounding (9.1 rpg.). She is the Eagles eighth all-time leading scorer and third on the all-time rebounding list. The 6-foot-6 senior center was a finalist for the 2010 State Farm All-America honor and earned a spot on the All-Region team. Swords', an ACC honor roll student, was also named to the 2010-11 Wade Trophy Watch list in August.
The 35th annual Wooden Award ceremony, which will include the announcement of the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners, a special tribute to Coach Wooden and Wooden Award founder Duke Llewellyn, and the presentation of the Wooden Award All American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, will take place the weekend of April 8-10, 2011.
The ACC and Big East each had five players named to the preseason Top 30. The Big 12, Big 10, Pac-10 and SEC each had three selections, followed by the Atlantic 10 and CAA with two, and the Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt and West Coast with one. Representing the ACC along with Swords is Duke's Jasmine Thomas, Miami's Shenise Johnson, North Carolina's Jessica Breland and Italee Lucas.
