Celebrating Conte Forum's Anniversary: In Their Own Words

Feb. 6, 2014

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -

To mark the 25th anniversary of Conte Forum, former student-athletes retell their favorite memories on the court and ice.

Danielle O’Banion  (1997-2001) is a former member of the women’s basketball program at BC. During her time at The Heights, the Eagles captured their first two NCAA berths in school history in 1999 and 2000 and advanced to the second round in both tournament appearances. She was a team co-captain her senior season and received Big East Academic All-Star honors. Danielle is currently the head coach for the Kent State women’s basketball team.

“I remember beating UConn in front of a packed Conte Forum in January 1999. We prepped for that game with Doug Flutie, Matt Hasselbeck, Tim Hasselbeck, and other BC football players on the scout team. We were tremendously confident and prepared as a result. We heard rumors all week long about how Connecticut fans were calling the ticket office requesting more game tickets. It was no surprise that nearly half of the arena erupted when the Huskies took the floor during warm-ups. Conte was magical that afternoon, especially after we went on to beat UConn, 78-66.

“I also remember attending my first-ever men’s ice hockey game my freshman year at BC, which was a sellout. The atmosphere was electric even though I had no real idea what was going on in the game. It seemed like the crowd practiced cheering together, as chants of “sieve, sieve, sieve” erupted every time the Eagles scored. It was never very cold in Conte during hockey games, because it was always packed with loyal fans.

“One of my final favorite memories is from one of our preseason workouts where we had to run around the concourse of Conte after moving inside due to thunderstorm. We had a particularly challenging session out on the turf that morning and we were relieved when the lighting moved in. However, we quickly realized that we would have to sprint laps around the concourse and do push-ups and sit-ups all along the hallway. I must say that the trophy case provided some inspiration as we were running, in hopes that our team would one day be debuted in the case. As we were running, it was hard not to be in awe of the Hobey Baker trophies among other awards won by BC athletics.”
