Chestnut Hill, Mass. -

To mark the 25th anniversary of Conte Forum, former student-athletes retell their favorite memories on the court and ice.

Carolyn Swords (2007-11) was selected to the second round of the 2011 WNBA Draft, 15th overall by the Chicago Sky. She became the second all-time leading scorer in BC’s history when she notched 27 points and 12 rebounds in the first game of the ACC Tournament against NC State on March 3, 2011. She finished her career with 2,029 points, only the second player in BC history to reach 2,000 points. Swords is the Eagles’ top career rebounder with 1,159 boards and ranks first in blocks with 178. Her career field-goal percentage (67.6) is fourth all-time in NCAA record books. She earned numerous accolades her senior season including AP All-American Honorable Mention, All-ACC First Team, State Farm Region 2 Team, Top 30 Midseason Naismith Watch List and was the recipient of an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship.

The former Eagle recounts her favorite Conte Forum memory from Feb. 4, 2010, when the Eagles defeated sixth-ranked Duke, 61-57. Swords, a junior, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds and went a perfect 10-for-10 from the line, including hitting eight straight in the final four minutes.

“A cold and quiet Thursday evening in February brought Duke to Conte Forum, the site of one of the most exciting upsets of my career. In a season filled with euphoric wins and disappointing losses, my teammates and I attacked preparation this game with a ferocious mentality. We needed this win.

“Sadly, the specifics of this game escape me now. It has only been four years since that game my junior year. What I do remember is the palpable and unquestionable belief among my teammates that we were going to win. Our zone defense had grown solid. We were deliberate and aggressive on offense. Thanks to the dedicated guidance of teammates and roommates I had finally found rhythm and consistency with my free throws that off season. They would certainly come in handy against Duke.

“Conte not only housed that moment of triumph, but each moment of preparation that made that triumph possible. We built the strength and endurance for that game in Conte's weight room in our offseason. We watched film all year to be our best for that game in our coach's offices. We schemed and drilled our game plan in Conte's Power Gym every day. Whether it was finally figuring out my free throws that previous July or pre-game meal just four hours before the game, Conte hosted the journey to that win. For fostering my growth as an athlete, for connecting me to caring people, for making my time as an Eagle unforgettable; Conte Forum will always have a place in my heart.”
