Doherty leads Women's Basketball Past FIU, 89-69

Senior Kristen Doherty had 19 points, five rebounds and reached the 1,000 point milestone as Boston College defeated FIU, 89-69, in a non-conference game at Conte Forum.
Doherty shot 4-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the 3-point line. She also went 9-for-9 from the foul line. Sophomore Nicole Boudreau added 14 points on 4-for-5 from the three-point line while Kat Cooper had 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Freshman Kelly Hughes chipped in with 12 points while Emilee Daley added nine points. The Eagles came out quick taking a 12-4 lead five minutes into the game behind six points from Cooper.
The lead grew to 23 points when Doherty hit a traditional three-point play at 9:37 left in the half. FIU's Jerico Coley heated up and hit 20 of the Panthers next 25 points to cut the BC lead, 51-32, at the half.
BC shot 63.3 percent from the floor in the half while FIU shot 42.9 percent. The Eagles had a 20-8 edge in rebounds. Doherty led BC with 12 points, while Boudreau had 11.
In the second half, FIU cut the lead to 17 points six minutes into the half. Daley would stick one of her three long-range shots, followed by two foul shots by Doherty and the Eagles lead at 22 points, 67-45. Doherty and Daley then hit back-to-back three's to extend BC's lead, 73-48 with 10 minutes to play in the game. The lead grew to 28 points when Hughes, who went 3-for-3 from the 3-point line, hit the first of her long range shots at 8:26.
Coley tried to keep FIU in the game as she hit two three's to cut the BC lead to 23 points with under seven minutes to play but there was not enough fire power. Coley shot 10-for-28 from the floor and finished with a game-high 36 points. BC shot 52.5 percent in the game, while FIU shot 40.8 percent. BC had 20 assists and won the battle of the boards, 39-20.
The Eagles (2-2) are back in action next week as the team will play three games at the Cancun Challenge in Mexico.
