EAGLES OFF THE BENCH COACHES: Cathy Inglese (Southern Connecticut '80), currently in her fifth season at Boston College, has a record of 56-66 with the Eagles. She has led the Hurricanes to five 20-win seasons, one 30- win season, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and two BIG EAST tournament championships. LAST GAME: Five players scored in double figures to lead Boston College to a 94-73 victory over Providence College at Conte Forum on January 8. The Eagles controlled the tempo of the game early, as sophomore guard Cal Bouchard scored 19 points and Boston College shot 70 percent in the first half. Providence opened the game with a 5-0 lead, but the Eagles went on a 33-16 run and connected on five-of-eight three point field goals. Boston College outrebounded the Friars, 22-13, and led 52-32 at halftime. Providence opened the second half with a 12-6 run and cut the Eagles lead to 14 points with 14:21 remaining in the game. The Friars made one last run that cut the Boston College lead to 11 points with 6:12 left in the contest, but the Eagles rallied to secure the 20-point victory. Bouchard finishedwith 23 points and sophomore guard Alissa Murphy added 18 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Aimee McGuire scored 16 points, and junior forward Allison Booth netted 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Eagles. Junior center Whitney Steele scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Five players scored in double figures for Providence, led by by Monika Roberts' 16 points and seven rebounds. SCORING: The Eagles are averaging 74.4 points per game, and two players are averaging double figures in scoring. Boston College opponents are averaging 60.6 points per game. Junior center Whitney Steele leads the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game. Sophomore guard Cal Bouchard is second on the team in scoring with an average of 15.5 points per game. CHARITY STRIPE: The Eagles are first in the BIG EAST Conference in free throw percentage. Boston College is currently shooting 72.3 percent from the line, connecting on 211-of-292 free throw attempts. In the win over Georgetown, the Eagles shot 87 percent (20-23) from the line. TIED BEST START: The Eagles' 5-1 record in their first six games tied the best start in school history. A loss to Holy Cross on December 9 ended the Eagles' bid to register the best start in school history. Boston College had started the season with a 5-1 record three other times (1995-96, 1984-85, and 1975-76). The last time that the Eagles opened with a 5-1 record was the 1995-96 season, but the team finished with a 10-17 overall record. VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: This season the Eagles are 1-0 against teams ranked in the Top 25. On November 23, the Eagles defeated No. 25 Texas, 82-68, at the Reebok Classic. The win marked only the second time in Boston College history that the Eagles had defeated a ranked team. On January 4, 1995, the Eagles defeated No. 20 Seton Hall, 53-49. EAGLES ON CAREER CHARTS: Aimee McGuire and Cal Bouchard are both ranked among the top 10 on the Boston College career charts in three-point field goals made and three-point field goals attempted. McGuire is currently sixth (67) and Bouchard is seventh (61) in three-point field goals made. In career three-point field goals attempted, McGuire is sixth (181) and Bouchard is seventh (168). DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Juniors Paula Bacso, Allison Booth, and Whitney Steele have each registered double-doubles this season. Bacso turned in the top performance of her collegiate career at Georgetown on December 2, scoring a career-high 18 points and pulling down a career-high 11 rebounds in the Eagles' victory. Booth registered her first double-double of the season at Villanova on January 3, netting 13 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds. Steele scored 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the win over Hartford on December 11. HEAD COACH CATHY INGLESE: Head coach Cathy Inglese is currently in her fifth season at the helm of the Boston College women's basketball program. Inglese arrived at Boston College in 1993 after serving as the head coach at the University of Vermont for seven seasons. In five seasons she has registered a record of 56-66, and has a career record of 176-140. During her stint at Vermont, she became the winningest college basketball coach in the nation over the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. Inglese's teams were undefeated in regular-season play in both 1991-92 (29-0) and 1992-93 (28-0), and became the only Division I men's or women's team to have back-to-back perfect records. She earned District I Coach of the Year and North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, and was a National Coach of the Year finalist all three years. A 1980 magna cum laude graduate of Southern Connecticut State College, Inglese was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. FRONTCOURT: Juniors Paula Bacso and Whitney Steele, and senior Kim Beezer have been a tough frontcourt combination for opponents this season. Bacso is averaging 8.7 points and 5.2 rebounds. The junior forward scored a career-high 18 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds in the victory at Georgetown on December 2. Steele has developed into a major force at center and is currently leading the Eagles in scoring with an average of 15.6 points per game. The 6-4 center has led the team in scoring in five games, and has scored in double figures 11 times this season. Beezer has played a key role for the Eagles this season, providing a spark with her intense style of play. A starter in all 13 games, Beezer is averaging 5.0 points per game. Although she is only 5-8, Beezer is second on the team in rebounding with an average of 5.5 per game. BACKCOURT: The backcourt tandem of Cal Bouchard and Aimee McGuire have started all 13 games for Boston College this season. Bouchard is currently second on the team in scoring with an average of 15.5 points per game. The sophomore guard has scored in double figures in 11 games, and was named to the Comfort Inn Downtown Classic and Corestates Hawk Classic All-Tournament Teams. McGuire is averaging 6.2 points and 2.4 rebounds and has connected on 50 percent (14-28) of her three-point field goal attempts. The senior captain netted a season-high 16 points in the victory over Providence on January 8. OFF THE BENCH: Four players off the bench have played major roles in the Eagles success this season. Alissa Murphy started 27 games as a freshman a year ago, but has already enjoyed a more productive season this year, coming off the bench. The sophomore guard is currently third on the team in scoring with an average of 8.9 points per game. Murphy netted a career-high 18 points and pulled down a season-high nine rebounds against Providence on January 8. Junior Allison Booth's return from knee surgery last spring has been impressive, and she is averaging 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. The 6-4 center is averaging 18.5 minutes per game. Booth registered a double-double at Villanova on January 3, scoring 13 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds. Freshman Jamie Cournoyer has played in 11 games and is averaging 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds. The 6-3 center netted 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in 17 minutes of play against Towson on November 28. Danielle O'Banion has played in 10 games and is averaging 3.9 points per game. The freshman guard scored a season-high 11 points in the victory at St. John's on December 31. CORESTATES HAWK CLASSIC: Boston College lost to Alabama, 79-70,in overtime, in the opening round of the Corestates Hawk Classic on December 28, but bounced back to defeat Yale, 58-38, in the consolation game on December 29. In the game against Alabama, the Eagles trailed 29-25 at halftime, but went on a 24-11 run and led the Crimson Tide, 49-40, with 10:50 remaining in regulation. Alabama battled back to tie the game at 60 at the end of regulation. The Crimson Tide secured the victory when Leah Goss scored a three-point field goal and Pam Duncan followed with two three-pointers and a jumper to give Alabama a 71-62 lead with 2:49 left in overtime. Dominque Canty led the Crimson Tide with 28 points and 10 rebounds and Goss added 13. Cal Bouchard led Boston College with 20 points. Whitney Steele scored 19 points and Allison Booth added 11. Four players scored in double figures to lead Boston College to a 58-38 victory over Yale in the consolation game. The Eagles led the Bulldogs, 32-19, at halftime, and Steele scored nine points in the second half to secure the win for Boston College. Steele finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Paula Bacso scored 13 points, Bouchard netted 11 points, and Aimee McGuire added 10 points for the Eagles. HAWK CLASSIC HONORS: Cal Bouchard earned Corestates Hawk Classic All-Tournament honors after scoring 31 points and recording nine assists and five steals in two games. The sophomore guard led Boston College in scoring against Alabama, netting 20 points, including three three-point field goals, in the overtime loss. Bouchard scored 11 points and added five assists and three steals in the consolation against Yale. OVERTIME: Boston College's 79-70 loss to Alabama on December 28 marked the first overtime game of the season for the Eagles. Prior to that loss, the last time that the Eagles played an overtime game was on December 29, 1995, when George Washington defeated Boston College, 70-67, at the Nationwide Lady Gator Classic in Gainesville, Florida. Boston College has an all-time record of 4-4 in overtime games. SPECIAL GUEST: The Eagles had a special guest attend the game at Georgetown on December 2. Senator Ted Kennedy attended the game at McDonough Arena as the Boston College women's basketball team's guest and addressed the Eagles in the locker room following the victory. COMFORT INN DOWNTOWN CLASSIC: Four players scored in double figures as Boston College defeated Towson University, 82-53, in the opening game of the Comfort Inn Downtown Classic in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 28. The Eagles shot 56.9 percent from the field and outrebounded the Tigers, 39-27. Boston College jumped out to a 27-15 lead and extended the advantage to 43-31 at halftime. The Eagles outscored Towson, 39-22, in the second half for the win. Whitney Steele led all scorers with 24 points, connecting on 11 of 16 attempts from the field. Kim Beezer netted a season-high 16 points (8-11 FG), and added four rebounds and six assists. Freshman Jamie Cournoyer netted 12 points and pulled down six rebounds in 17 minutes of play. Cal Bouchard added 11 points in the win, and junior center Allison Booth grabbed nine rebounds. In the championship game against host Georgia Tech on November 29, the Yellow Jackets rallied from a 21-point deficit to defeat Boston College, 81-79. Georgia Tech's Shelli Novotny scored the winning basket with 1.3 seconds remaining in the game. Bouchard led all scorers with 27 points and handed out seven assists. Steele netted 20 points and pulled down six rebounds and Murphy added 17 points for the Eagles. Boston College led Georgia Tech, 44-36, at halftime, but the Yellow Jackets went on a 20-6 run and tied the game at 64-64 with 7:33 remaining. The Eagles led 74-69 with 3:28 left in the game, but Georgia Tech's Carla Munnion scored five points and gave the Yellow Jackets a 75-74 lead with 2:44 remaining. With the score tied at 79-79, Novotny scored the winning basket with 1.3 seconds remaining. ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: Cal Bouchard and Whitney Steele were both named to the Comfort Inn Downtown Classic All-Tournament team. Bouchard scored 27 points and handed out seven assists in the loss to Georgia Tech in the championship game. The sophomore guard registered 11 points in the win over Towson. Steele led the Eagles in scoring against Towson with 24 points, connecting on 11 of 16 attempts from the field. The junior center scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds in the 81-79 loss to Georgia Tech. BIG EAST CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cal Bouchard was named BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week on November 24, after averaging 21.5 points in Boston College's two wins over Marist and Texas. In the 104-60 win over Marist on November 20, the sophomore guard netted 11 points (4-5 FG, 1-2 3-pt., 2-2 FT), pulled down four rebounds, and dished out a career-high eight assists. She led the Eagles to a 82-68 victory over No. 25 Texas at the Reebok Classic on November 23, scoring a career-high 32 points (9-17 FG, 2-6 3-pt., 12-14 FT), and added four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. REEBOK CLASSIC: Boston College and Arkansas were the two winners in the annual Reebok Classic held at the FleetCenter in Boston on November 23. The Eagles have participated in the Classic all three years, but the 82-68 win over Texas was the first victory for Boston College at the event. Arkansas defeated No.11 Iowa, 83-57, in the opening game of the Reebok Classic. In last year's Classic, Boston College lost to Connecticut, 76-38, and Vanderbilt defeated Louisville, 63-60. The crowd of 9,337 attending the two games was the largest ever to watch a women's basketball game in Massachusetts. Last year's attendance figure broke the record set in the inaugural Reebok Classic, when 8,307 fans attended the two games. The first year of the Reebok Classic, Vanderbilt defeated UCLA, 70-64, and Ohio State defeated Boston College, 62-40. 100 POINTS: When Boston College scored 104 points on November 20 in the victory over Marist, it marked only the third time in school history that the women's basketball team scored over 100 points in a single game. The other two times were during the 1990-91 season when the Eagles defeated New Hampshire, 104-76, on December 12, 1990, and St. John's, 101-75, on February 6, 1991. EXPLOSIVE EAGLES: The 104-point performance in the season opener tied the most points ever by a Boston College women's basketball team in a single game. The only other time that the Eagles scored 104 points was on December 12, 1990 when Boston College defeated New Hampshire, 104-76. BALANCED ATTACK: Six Boston College players scored in double figures in the 104-60 victory over Marist, and 12 of the 13 players on the roster scored in the game. Junior center Whitney Steele led Boston College with 20 points and sophomore guard Alissa Murphy added 12 points. Sophomore guard Cal Bouchard registered 11 points and dished out eight assists, and junior center Allison Booth netted 11 points. Junior forward Paula Bacso scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and senior guard Aimee McGuire netted 10 points. THIRD IN BIG EAST POLL: The Boston College women's basketball team was selected to finish third in the BIG EAST 6 division in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches. The University of Connecticut and Rutgers University were selected to win their respective divisions. PRE-SEASON HONORS: Cal Bouchard was named to the preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team by a vote of the league's head coaches. A unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team a year ago, the native of Aurora, Ontario, earned league Rookie of the Week honors three times during the 1996-97 season. McGuire was a co-captain with Holly Porter last season. NEW FACES: Head coach Cathy Inglese has three new assistant coaches for the 1997-98 season, Pam Borton, Kelly Cole, and Bill Gould. Borton joined the Boston College women's basketball staff after serving as the head coach at the University of Vermont for four years. She led the Catamounts to a 69-46 record and a North Atlantic Conference Championship. Cole comes to Boston College from Northwestern University, where she served as an assistant coach for two seasons. Gould was an assistant coach at Stonehill College for three years before becoming a member of Inglese's staff. INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES: Cal Bouchard and Aimee McGuire gained international playing experience this past summer. Bouchard competed internationally as a member of the Canadian National Team.
