Longmeadow, Mass - The Boston College men's tennis team defeated No. 51 Miami, 5-2, at the Grande Meadows Athletic Club in Longmeadow, Mass. It was the first Atlantic Coast Conference win of 2012 for the Eagles (5-8, 1-6 ACC) and the first since 2008.
The Eagles swept the Hurricanes (9-7, 2-5 ACC) in doubles action, winning all three matches. Seniors Akash Muppidi and Alex Skinniner, ranked 36th in the nation, beat Wilfredo Gonzalez and Omar Aly, 8-5, on the No. 1 court. On court two, sophomore Michael McGinnis and Philip Nelson defeated Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto, 8-4, while junior Billy Grokenberger and freshman Matt Wagner earned a 8-7 victory on court three over Mark Schanerman and Marco Stancati.
Muppidi went on to defeat Flores in the No. 1 singles position in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Skinner also won his singles competition, beating Aly, in a tough, three-set match, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, on court two. Nelson took his match at the No. 5 position, beating Henrique Tsukamoto in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 6-3). Junior Klaus Puestow helped the Eagles to victory with a 7-6, 7-6, victory over Victor Mauz on the sixth court.
Grokenberger fell in the No. 3 singles position to Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-4, and sophomore Jonathan Raude lost to Soto, 6-1, 6-4, on court four.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, April 1 with a 3 p.m. match against Dartmouth.
