The Boston College men's tennis team defeated Villanova, 6-1, in San Diego, Calif., on Thursday to improve its record to 4-5. The Eagles swept the doubles matches and won five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets.
On the doubles court, junior Billy Gronkenberger and freshman Philip Nelson tallied the first victory on court two, defeating Mark Miller and Tim Abbroccciamento, 8-3. Sophomore Michael McGinnis and freshman Matt Wagner then beat Ryan Peyton and Mike Rosengren, 8-2, on court three and seniors Akash Muppidi and Alex Skinner finished the sweep with an 8-4 win over Tom O'Brien and Kelly Donaldson.
Skinner took the No. 2 position victory over Peyton, 6-2, 6-0, to kick off the singles action. Then, McGinnis beat Donaldson, 6-3, 6-0, in the six spot and Nelson beat Miller, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5. Gronkenberger tallied the only loss on the third court, falling to Rosengren, 6-1, 6-2. Muppidi got the Eagles back on track, beating O'Brien, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot and sophomore Jonathan Raude finished off the scoring with a 6-2, 6-4, win over Abbroccciamento to seal the BC victory.
The Eagles return to the courts on March 16 in College Park, Md., when they take on No. 67 Maryland at 2:30 p.m.
