Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College Men's Tennis (3-2, 0-1 ACC) team earned two victories over non-conference opponents Marquette (2-3) and Hartford (2-3) this weekend and fell to No. 32 Virginia Tech (3-2, 1-0 ACC) in the first ACC matchup of the season. The Eagles posted 4-3 and 6-1 victories over Marquette and Hartford, respectively, while falling to the Hokies, 6-1.
Senior Akash Muppidi earned a 6-1, 7-6, victory in No. 1 singles spot over Marquette's Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley on Saturday, and tallied the No. 1 doubles win with senior Alex Skinner, 9-8, over Golden Eagles Crowley and Dan Mamalat. The duo secured another win Sunday against Virginia Tech's Luka Somen and Corrado Delg'Incerti Tocci, 8-5. Freshmen Philip Nelson and Matt Wagner earned an additional victory over the Hokies in No. 3 doubles, 9-8, giving the Eagles the point for taking two-of-three matches. It would mark the only score of the match for BC.
The Eagles went 6-1 over Hartford on Sunday afternoon, sweeping all three doubles matches and winning five of the six singles matches. Sophomore Michael McGinnis came back from a first set defeat to tie the match against No. 2 singles opponent Aneil Bhalla before falling, 10-7,in the extra session. Junior Billy Grokenberger tallied his second singles victory of the week, defeating Marco Neves in the No. 1 singles spot, 6-3, 6-1.
Three Eagles saw their first action of the dual-match season against Hartford as senior Jonathan Schroeder
and freshman Joe Davison
earned victories on court four and six, respectively. Davison swept Edgardo Ureta, 6-0, 6-0, and Schroeder tallied a 6-1, 6-2, win over Mike Kennelly. In doubles action, senior Rob Ankner
earned an 8-2 win over Alex Holdstein and Bogdan Nedelcu with Skinner on court three.
The Eagles return to the court Wednesday, Feb. 15, for their second ACC contest of the season against Florida State at 6 p.m. in Longmeadow, Mass.
