Boston College is mourning the loss of former men's soccer player Jamen Amato, a 2007 graduate, who passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 14 after a long battle with cancer.

"I had the pleasure of coaching Jamen for four years," head men's soccer coach Ed Kelly said. "Jamen exemplified the Boston College student-athlete. He was a fierce competitor as well as a fun-loving person. He pursued excellence on and off the field. He was a model young man whose time was cut far too short. Our soccer family is devastated by the loss of Jamen. On behalf of the Boston College community, I extend our prayers and sympathy to the Amato family. We will miss Jamen terribly."

A native of Pasadena, California, Amato was a four-year letterman (2003-06), who served as one of three team captains during his senior season with Charlie Davies and Issey Maholo. He finished his collegiate career with 12 points - four goals and four assists - in 65 career games.

A history major, he earned All-ACC Academic Team honors twice following the program's transition from the Big East. Previously, he had captured Big East Conference All-Academic team recognition as a sophomore in 2004. He earned the Boston College Director of Athletics Award for Academic Achievement in each of his four years.

Jamen was the middle of Tess and John Amato's three children. His father and older sister Ashley are both Boston College graduates. His younger sister Mary is a sophomore.

Boston College is planning an on-campus celebration of Jamen's life. Head coach Ed Kelly will coordinate the on-campus efforts.
