Sophomore Casey Schmidt, a member of the men's soccer team at Boston College, has added a second national honor to his resume after being named to the Soccer America college Team of the Week for his two goals last week against two ranked league opponents. He was also honored as SoccerTimes.com Player of the Week on Tuesday after being named the BIG EAST Conference's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The recognition comes after he scored both Boston College goals last week, one each against top-ranked Connecticut on Oct. 11 and seventh-ranked Pittsburgh on Oct. 15. His goal against the Huskies gave Boston College a 1-0 lead and allowed the Eagles to tie the nation's number one team. Against Pittsburgh, he netted the game's only goal in the 63rd minute and, for the second-straight season, defeated the Panthers with his lone score.
The BIG EAST Conference honored Schmidt as the league's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season for his efforts. He was also a 1999 BIG EAST All-Rookie Selection. The Eagles are 6-0-1 when he scores this season.
A native of Newbury Park, Calif., he currently leads the Eagles in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points. His overall total in 12 games puts him in tie for third in the BIG EAST Conference in scoring. His 14 points on six goals and two assists in eight conference games rests him atop the league scoring standings, three points ahead of the next player.
Boston College is currently 6-5-1 overall and third in the BIG EAST with a 5-2-1 record. The Eagles will next face 12th-ranked St. John's on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m., in Jamaica, N.Y.
