CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 14 Boston College men's soccer team opens the 2012 season on the road when it faces Quinnipiac on Friday at 4 p.m. at the QU Soccer Field.
The Eagles return 80 percent of their goals scored, 77 percent of their assists and 79 percent of their points from the 2011 season. The attack will be led by seniors Kyle Bekker (eight goals, seven assists) and Charlie Rugg (eight goals, five assists). In addition, BC returns a combined 73 starts in the backfield which will be anchored by senior Justin Luthy in net, who is entering his fourth and final season as the starting goalkeeper.
BC finished the 2011 season at 14-6-1 and went 4-4-0 in the ACC. After receiving a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament, BC lost in the second round to Rutgers in a penalty kick shootout. Boston College also reached the final of the 2011 ACC Championship - its second appearance in the title game. It marked the fifth consecutive time that BC reached the semifinals of the tournament - the only ACC team to accomplish that feat in the last five seasons.
Quinnipiac finished the 2011 campaign with a 6-10-0 record and placed eighth in the Northeast Conference at 4-6-0. The Bobcats' most dangerous threat is senior Philip Suprise, who was an All-NEC First Team honoree last year with five goals and four assists.
BC won the meeting between the two programs last year, 5-0. Bekker, Rugg and sophomore Diego Medina-Mendez all scored in the match.
After their trip to Hamden, Conn., the Eagles will open the home portion of their schedule on Monday with a 5 p.m. contest against Boston University at the Newton Campus Field.
