July 18, 2011
Boston College sophomore D/MF Colin Murphy, who led New Zealand to the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Under-20 Championship in April, will play for his country in the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The group stage of the tournament begins July 29 in Colombia. The Junior All Whites will start their quest for the title July 30 against Cameroon in the Group B opener. New Zealand also faces Uruguay (August 2) and Portugal (August 5) in group play.
Murphy and the New Zealand squad qualified for Colombia 2011 by winning all four matches in the OFC U-20 Championship by a combined score of 22-1. They defeated Soloman Islands (3-0) and New Caledonia (10-0) in group play and advanced to the finals with a 6-0 triumph against Fiji. New Zealand faced Soloman Islands once again in the final and the match was tied 1-1 at the half, but a pair of second half goals ensured the victory.
Murphy appeared in all four games for the Junior All Whites, starting three of them. He started the first match of group play and the semifinal and final rounds.
He has 18 international caps, including three while playing for New Zealand in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in South Korea. He has also competed on a pre U-17 World Cup tour to the United States (Oregon), South America and South Korea. He played club soccer with Papatoetoe AFC, capturing Auckland city U-17 and U-19 titles.
Murphy has played in 42 games in his two seasons at Boston College. He is a resident of Onehunga, New Zealand who played the 2007 and 2008 seasons at Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.) after playing the previous two years at St. Paul's Collegiate in Hamilton, New Zealand.
