Jan. 17, 2013
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Former men's soccer standout Charlie Rugg was drafted 19th overall by the LA Galaxy in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft held on January 17 at the Indiana Convention Center.
Rugg was the final pick of the first round when he was scooped up by the two-time defending MLS champions. Kyle Bekker was drafted earlier in the day by Toronto FC at third overall. It marks the first time in Boston College history that two players were selected in the first round.
BC, Maryland and Notre Dame were the only schools to have two players drafted in the opening round.
Rugg was the first Eagle to be named to the All-ACC first team three times. He was also an All-ACC Freshmen Team honoree in 2009.
"Goals find him," ESPN analyst Alexi Lalas said after the pick. "That is not something you teach when you talk about a guy like Charlie Rugg."
Rugg is one of the most prolific scorers in BC history as he ranks fifth all-time in goals (28) and points (74). He led BC with five goals, four assists and 14 points as a senior despite playing in just 13 matches.
