Jan. 17, 2013
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Former men's soccer standout Kyle Bekker was drafted third overall by Toronto FC in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft held on January 17 at the Indiana Convention Center.
Bekker is the first Eagle to be taken in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft which originated in 2000. Paul Keegan was the sixth overall pick in the 1996 MLS College Draft.
The Oakville, Ontario, product was a two-time All-ACC first-team selection and an all-regional pick as a junior and senior. He was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Season.
His stock rose during the recent MLS Combine where he was named the most valuable player of the showcase.
ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman commented on Bekker following the pick: "How about the free kick goal he scored in game three (of the MLS Combine)? Spectacular. The one thing I love about him is his movement off the ball - very clean. He never loses the ball - right foot, left foot - and he loves set pieces."
Bekker played in 80 matches and made 79 starts while at The Heights. He ranks second all-time at Boston College in assists (22), eighth in points (56) and 10th in goals (17).
