NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman forward Edvin Worley headed in a loose ball in the six-yard box for the game's only goal as Boston College earned a 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over No. 17 Virginia before 591 fans at the Newton Campus Soccer Complex.
Worley finished off a set piece as senior Paul Gerstenberger launched a free kick from midfield into the 18-yard box. Gerstenberger's feed was redirected with an Alejandro Bedoya head ball into the center of the crease that Worley knocked into the net at 65:28.
The goal was Worley's third of his freshman season.
Boston College (7-4-2, 3-2-0 ACC) totaled 13 shots in the game, including five on Virginia goalkeeper Michael Giallambardo.
Virginia falls to 8-4-0 and suffered its first conference loss. It is now 4-1-0 in ACC action.
The visiting Cavaliers attempted six shots in each half, connecting twice on the Eagle net.
UVA's top scoring chance came just more than 26 minutes into the match as Brian Ownby's right-footed shot caromed off the crossbar and out of bounds.
BC senior goalkeeper Chris Brown made two saves in the contest to earn his sixth win of the season and the 25th of his collegiate career.
Both teams took five corner kicks in the match.
