NEWTON, Mass. - Junior Derek McCaffrey netted the game's only goal early in the second half of play to lead Boston University in a 1-0 victory over host and 14th-ranked Boston College before 226 fans on Monday at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
BC (1-1-0), which had won five straight and 11 of the last 12 against the Terriers, had numerous chances to score the equalizer, including a point blank attempt from sophomore Diego Medina-Mendez in the 59th minute just moments after McCaffrey scored the go-ahead goal, yet did not to convert.
The loss snapped a series win streak that dates to the last Terrier victory - which came in double overtime on Aug. 25, 2006 by a score of 2-1. BC outscored BU, 9-2, during the five-match win streak.
Boston University (1-1-0) tallied 15 shots, including five shots on goal, while the Eagles attempted 11 shots of which five were on net. Freshman forward Derrick Boateng was on the receiving end of a crisp passing sequence that started with Kyle Bekker, continued onto Colin Murphy then Stefan Carter, whose cross Boateng scissor-kicked wide of the goal.
Medina-Mendez led all players with three shots on goal in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Luthy recorded four saves in the losing effort. He falls to 1-1-0 this season and 30-28-6 in his 64-game collegiate career.
