Boston College freshman defenseman Michael Matheson, who scored twice in last Friday's 3-3 tie at Providence, has earned Hockey East Association Co-Rookie of the Week honors.
Matheson gave the visiting Eagles a two-goal lead twice at Providence on Dec. 7. The 6-foot-2, 189-pound product of Pointe-Claire, Quebec gave BC a 2-0 lead with a power-play goal at 13:06 of the second period. Following an goal by the Friars early in the third period, Matheson put BC ahead 3-1 at 1:56 of the third period for his first multiple-goal game.
Matheson finished the night with a game-high six shots and a +2 rating.
He has 10 points - four goals and six assists - in 14 games this season. He leads all Boston College defensemen with a plus-minus rating of +11.
Boston College is 11-2-1 and 9-2-1 in league play and is back atop both major national polls released on Monday. The Eagles return to action against Alabama-Huntsville at the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. EST. Top-ranked BC will face fourth-ranked Minnesota, the tournament host, on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m.
