BOSTON, MA - The City of Boston, the Boston Red Sox, Hockey East Association, and Fenway Sports Management (FSM) today announced that Boston College (BC) and Northeastern University (NU) will compete during a second men's outdoor hockey doubleheader at Fenway Park as part of Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012. The two-week series of ice events will include two popular Mayor's Community Skate Days where City of Boston residents can skate for free.
BC and NU will face off on January 14, 2012 at 6 p.m. Long-time high school rivals Boston College High School and Catholic Memorial School have also been invited to play a hockey game at Fenway Park on January 14 at 3 p.m., pending approval from the respective schools and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
"After the January 7th hockey doubleheader at Fenway Park sold out in less than a week, we wanted to offer hockey fans another opportunity to watch an outdoor game at the ballpark this winter," said Red Sox Executive Vice President/COO Sam Kennedy. "The addition of these two games also gives Boston residents a rare chance to see two popular local teams compete at both the high school and collegiate level."
Tickets for the single ticket doubleheader go on sale November 18 at noon (EST) and will be available at redsox.com/frozenfenway, by calling (877) RED-SOX9, or at the Fenway Park box office. Fans with disabilities may also call (877) RED-SOX9 to purchase accessible seating. The Red Sox' TTY number for hearing-impaired fans is (617) 226-6644.
Sun Life Financial Returns as Title Sponsor
Sun Life Financial, a leading international financial services company, is returning in 2012 to the winter Fenway Park event as title sponsor. Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012 includes the January 7 and 14 hockey doubleheaders, as well as all other ice events taking place at the ballpark during the first two weeks of January. Sun Life Financial was also the title sponsor of the 2010 Frozen Fenway hockey event.
"With Wellesley our U.S. headquarters and Boston the hub of our wholesaler team, we are delighted to support Frozen Fenway for a second year," said Wes Thompson, President of Sun Life Financial US. "This represents another chance for the New England community to watch great hockey in a unique outdoor setting, and for Boston residents to take to the ice themselves."
"We are thrilled to have the continued involvement of Sun Life Financial in what is becoming a staple winter event in Boston," said Kennedy.
Dates Set for Mayor's Community Skate Days
Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012 will also include two free skating days for City of Boston residents as part of the Mayor's Community Skate Days. The Mayor's Community Skate will take place on January 1st and again on January 16th.
"Boston is the best sports town in America and with Frozen Fenway it only gets better," said Mayor Thomas M. Menino. "What a thrill it is for local hockey fans and our high school athletes to be able to experience hockey in historic Fenway Park. It is a truly special event and a highlight of winter in Boston."
Several thousand tickets for the two Community Skate days will be distributed to various Boston residents and groups through the Mayor's office. Additional information about how Boston residents can obtain tickets will be announced through the Mayor's office in the coming weeks.
The Boston Red Sox and FSM will be scheduling additional Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012 events, including public high school matches, youth hockey games and women's ice hockey.
