Men's Hockey Chosen To Repeat As League Champions
Sept. 25, 2012
Boston College has been chosen as the preseason favorite to win the league regular-season title voted on by the Hockey East Coaches and announced at the league's annual media day at TD Garden on Tuesday. BC earned nine (of 10) first-place votes and a total of 90 points. UMass-Lowell was chosen to finish second with 74 points, followed closely by (in order): Boston University with 73 points, New Hampshire (63 points), Maine (56 points), Northeastern (44 points), Providence (44 points), Merrimack (38 points), Massachusetts (35 points) and Vermont (23 points).
It marks the fifth straight seasons and 12th time in the last 15 seasons that the Eagles have been selected as the preseason favorite, or co-favorite, to win the conference crown.
Boston College won its record 12th league regular-season title after finishing its conference schedule with a 19-7-1 record last winter. The title marked the program's sixth Hockey East regular-season championship under head coach Jerry York. BC captured four regular-season titles in five years from 2000-01 to 2004-05.
With its 4-1 win over Maine in last March's Hockey East championship game, Boston College earned its league-best 11th Hockey East Tournament title, including its ninth under York.
York and the Eagles return 15 lettermen from last year's 33-win club. The team's preseason begins on Saturday, Oct. 6 with an exhibition contest against New Brunswick at 7 p.m.
Boston College will open the season on the road - at Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 13. It will then travel to Massachusetts on Friday, Oct. 19 before hosting the Huskies on Oct. 20.
The Oct. 20 home contest against Merrimack will mark the team's home-opening game. BC will raise its national-championship banner that same night as a final salute to last year's title team.
