Boston College men's hockey and Notre Dame will faceoff at Fenway Park in game two of a two-game Hockey East doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, according to a joint announcement made by the City of Boston, the Hockey East Association and Fenway Sports Management on Thursday.

The game between the Eagles and Irish represents one of four college hockey games to be played during Frozen Fenway 2014, a two-week series of hockey and ice skating events that have been scheduled.

Game times and ticket information for the two doubleheaders will be announced in the coming months.

Boston College - Notre Dame Series Notes:

  • Boston College and Notre Dame have met 32 times in series history that dates to 1969. The Eagles hold a 17-13-2 advantage in the all-time series, including a 9-7-2 record in 18 games under the direction of head coach Jerry York.
  • BC and Notre Dame have met just three times on neutral ice. On December 20, 1971, Notre Dame captured a 7-4 win over the Eagles at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. On Oct. 13, 2000, the Eagles earned a 4-1 win over the Irish at the Omaha Civic Auditorium and, on April 12, 2008, BC captured a 4-1 win over Notre Dame at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., to win the NCAA Championship.
  • At the conclusion of each game between Boston College and Notre Dame, the winner is presented with the John "Snooks" Kelley - Charles "Lefty" Smith Trophy. The coveted trophy is named in honor of two of college hockey's legendary head coaches. Snooks Kelley served as BC's head coach for 36 years (1932-42; 1946-72) and became the first coach in college hockey history to surpass the 500-victory plateau. Lefty Smith was hired in 1968 as the Notre Dame's first varsity hockey coach. He guided the Irish for 19 seasons (1968-87), amassing a 307-320-30 record. He passed away on Jan. 3, 2012.

2014 Frozen Fenway Information

Hockey East Matchups On Saturday, January 4, 2014, the Hockey East league games will feature Merrimack College against Providence College, followed by Notre Dame against Boston College. The Eagles are the only Hockey East team to play in all three Frozen Fenway events since they began in 2010. Boston College and Notre Dame have met 32 times in series history dating back to 1969. This will be Notre Dame and BC's first meeting as conference rivals.

The following Saturday, January 11, UMass Lowell will face Northeastern University. The second game of the doubleheader will highlight the University of Maine against Boston University.

Mayor's Community Skates

As the ice returns to Fenway Park, so does Mayor Menino's Community Skates, making the ice at Fenway Park available to residents of the City of Boston for two free days of skating. Boston residents will have an opportunity to skate on Sunday, December 29, and again on New Year's Day, Wednesday, January 1.

Information about how to obtain tickets for the Mayor's Community Skates will be announced in the coming months.

The Mayor's Community Skates and the Hockey East games are just the first in a series of events and experiences that will take place as part of the 17-day Frozen Fenway 2014 program. In 2012, over 90,000 hockey and skating fans came through the ballpark to enjoy a game or skate during the free skating days.
