Boston College forward Cam Atkinson
has been named one of three Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalists, according to an announcement made by the committee on Wednesday afternoon.
Atkinson, North Dakota's Matt Frattin and Miami's Andy Miele represent this year's top-three finalists.
A unanimous All-Hockey East first-team selection as a junior in 2010-11, Atkinson recorded 52 points - 31 goals and 21 assists - in 39 games. He ranks second in the nation in goals and has tallied 61 in the past two seasons.
Atkinson earned 2011 Hockey East Tournament Most Valuable Player honors after he registered four points - three goals and one assist - in four league postseason victories, including three points - two (third-period) goals and one assist - in BC's 5-3 win over Merrimack (3/19) in the championship game.
He played in 117 career games and totaled 124 points - 68 goals and 46 assists. He concluded his collegiate career ranked 22nd on the school's goals scored list and ranks 45th on BC's all-time points list.
Atkinson, who was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the sixth round (157th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, recently signed a professional contract with the Blue Jackets organization.
The three finalists were selected from the initial list of Top Ten candidates by the 23-member Selection Committee and an additional round of online fan balloting to determine this year's Hobey Baker winner. Criteria for the award includes: strength of character on and off the ice, displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
The 2011 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced Friday, April 8, 2011 from the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., during the NCAA Frozen Four. The 31st annual announcement will be aired live on ESPNU at 6:00 p.m., CT.
BC finished the 2010-11 season with a 30-8-1 record, including a 20-6-1 mark in Hockey East play. The Eagles captured the Beanpot title, the Hockey East regular-season title and the league tournament championship.
