Boston College junior forward Cam Atkinson has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2011 Hobey Baker Memorial Award given annually to the nation's top collegiate hockey player, the committee announced on Thursday evening.
The top 10 list is compiled from balloting from all 59 Division I college hockey coaches and by an online fan ballot at: hobeybaker.com. The top 10 list will now be voted on by the 25-member selection committee and a second round of fan balloting to determine the Hobey Hat Trick (three finalists) for this year's award.
The Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists will be announced on March 31 and the Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced Friday, April 8, 2011 from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., during the NCAA Frozen Four.
Atkinson is one of the nation's top scorers with 48 points - 28 goals and 20 assists - in 36 games. He ranks tied for fourth among all scorers in college hockey in goals per game (0.78) and is 11th in points per game (1.33). The Greenwich, Conn., resident is tied with his teammate Brian Gibbons to rank second in the nation in shorthanded goals with four.
Boston College (28-7-1, 20-6-1 HEA), the regular-season champion and top seed for the 27th Hockey East Tournament Championship, will face No. 6 seed Northeastern (14-15-8, 10-10-7 HEA) in semifinal competition on Friday, March 18 at TD Garden. Face off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
No. 2 seed New Hampshire and No. 4 seed Merrimack will follow in semifinal competition. Friday's semifinals can be seen live on NESN.
The winners of each semifinal will meet on Saturday, March 19 at 7 p.m. in the Hockey East Championship game, which will be broadcast live on NESNplus.
