Boston College Records Third Consecutive Shutout, 8-0 over Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Freshman goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 23 saves for his third consecutive shutout (fourth on the season) as ninth-ranked Boston College blanked Providence, 8-0, before 2,872 at Schneider Arena.
The victory improves the Eagles' record to 14-6-3 (8-4-2 in HOCKEY EAST). Providence drops to 12-8-1 (6-6).
Clemmensen has not allowed a goal in his last 241:34. He also tied a HOCKEY EAST record (held by Sean Matile, UNH 1996-97) with his third league shutout. Clemmensen, who has blanked St. Lawrence (11/28), Maine (1/10), and Providence (1/16), also tied a Boston College season-record with his fourth, tying Jack Fitzgerald's mark set back in 1924-25.
Boston College took a quick 4-0 lead just 10:47 into the game as freshman forward Brian Gionta and junior forward Andy Powers connected on tallies just 12 seconds apart.
The Eagles extended their lead with two goals in each of the final two periods to extend their shutout streak to three games. It is BC's first back-to-back-to-back shutouts since 1919-20.
13 different BC players recorded at least one point in the contest. Six Eagles had multiple-point efforts, led by Powers (two goals, one assist), Gionta (one goal, two assists), and freshman defenseman Rob Scuderi (three assists).
