CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman goaltender Scott Clemmensen stopped 24 shots as ninth-ranked Boston College shutout Providence, 6-0, tonight before 5,213 at Kelley Rink.
Clemmensen stopped 14 of the 24 shots he faced in the second period as the Eagles extended a slim 1-0 lead into a commanding three-goal lead. Two freshmen, Mike Lephart and Brian Gionta, tallied the second-period goals for BC.
Clemmensen (2.81 goals against average) has not allowed a goal in his last 181:34 of action. It is also the Eagles' second consecutive shutout on the season-- the first time since December 1977 that a BC team has recorded back-to-back shutouts.
Gionta contributed a season-high two goals (his 12th and 13th of the season) and one assist, while junior Marty Reasoner scored his team-high 18th goal. Freshman defenseman Rob Scuderi and junior Andy Powers each added two assists for the Eagles, now 13-6-3 (7-4-2 in HOCKEY EAST). Providence drops to 12-7-1 (6-5-0).
