Eagles Drop First Game in Badger Showdown to Northern Michigan, 3-2
MILWAUKEE-- Sophomore forward Blake Bellefeuille scored two goals to lead Boston College in a 3-2 loss to Northern Michigan in the opening round of the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Boston College trailed 2-1 after one period. After Northern Michigan opened the scoring at 11:04, Bellefeuille evened the score two minutes later with his seventh goal of the season. The Wildcats answered with the go-ahead tally at 13:30.
Bellefeuille netted his second goal of the night -- on the power play -- at 7:36 of the middle period, tying the score at 2-2 after two stanzas.
Northern Michigan scored the decisive goal on a breakaway at 5:30 of the third period. The Eagles had several chances to tie the game, including a Nick Pierandri shot that ricocheted off the goalpost.
BC freshman Marty Hughes tallied two assists, while junior Andy Powers and freshman Mike Lephart each added one assist.
Boston College freshman goalie Scott Clemmensen finished with 27 saves. Northern Michigan goalie Duane Hoey also made 27 stops.
Post Game Notes: Boston College was 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Eagles held NMU scoreless in five man-advantage situations ... Boston College is playing without the services of three players -- sophomore forward Jeff Farkas, sophomore defenseman Mike Mottau and freshman forward Brian Gionta -- who are competing with the US National Junior Team in the IIHF World Junior Championship in Finland.
The US team has a 1-1 record entering Sundays game against Russia. Through two games, Gionta leads the United States with three goals. Farkas tallied two goals and two assists in Fridays 8-2 win over Kazakhstan ... BC will meet either Wisconsin or Harvard in the tournaments consolation contest on Sunday, December 28.
