Third Period Spurt Lifts BC Past Brown, 6-3
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Down 3-1 late in the second period, Boston College, ranked #8 in the nation, scored five unanswered goals, including three in a 2:43 third period span, to defeat Brown, 6-3, before 1,280 at Meehan Auditorium.
The Eagles improve to 10-3, their best start since 1983-84, and remain undefeated (5-0) in non-conference play. Brown drops to 1-5.
Down 3-1 with 4:48 left in the second period, senior defenseman Ken Hemenway (Anchorage, Alaska) rifled a slapshot past Brown goaltender Scott Stirling to cut the Bears' lead to one goal. BC closed out the period in fine fashion, killing a five-on-three Brown power-play. During that sequence, the Eagles did not get the puck out of the Brown offensive zone, however BC freshman goaltender Scott Clemmensen (Urbandale, Iowa) made several key saves to thwart any Brown scoring attempts.
In the final period, the Eagles scored four times, including three in a 2:43 span, to take the lead. Freshman right wing Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y.) tied the score at three at the 9:10 mark with a power-play goal. Gionta has now scored a point in his last nine games.
27 seconds later, junior center Marty Reasoner (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) added another power-play tally to give the Eagles' their first lead of the game. Sophomore Blake Bellefeuille (Framingham, Mass.) scored the third goal of the spurt, a shorthanded tally, at 11:13.
At 18:57, Reasoner closed out the scoring with an an empty-net goal. Sophomore defenseman Mike Mottau (Avon, Mass.) and Jamie O'Leary (Needham, Mass.) combined for five assists, while Clemmensen stopped 27 shots.
Head coach Jerry York on the victory:
"We capitalized on several opportunities in the third period." "When we killed off that five-on-three penalty, we got some added life." "I thought Scott Clemmensen played real well in net."
