Boston College Tops Harvard in Overtime
Boston College 4, Harvard 3 (OT)
Freshman Marty Hughes' goal with 29 seconds remaining in overtime capped a Boston College comeback as the Eagles defeated Harvard, 4-3, in a non-league game at Kelley Rink. Boston College has won five consecutive games over Harvard, dating back to January 3, 1992.
Nick Pierandri and Chris Masters assisted on Hughes' decisive goal.
The Eagles trailed 3-1 entering the final period, before two power-play goals forced the extra session. Junior Marty Reasoner pulled BC to within one with his team-leading eighth goal of the season 23 seconds into the final period. Senior defenseman Ken Hemenway tied the game at 17:25 with the Eagles holding a two-man advantage. It was Hemenway's first goal of the season.
After each team scored one first-period goal, Harvard's Henry Higdon and Chris Bala each tallied one goal in the middle stanza to put the Crimson ahead, 3-1.
Bala finished the game with two goals for Harvard (1-3-1).
Hemenway had one goal and one assist to lead Boston College (8-2-0). Freshman Brian Gionta added two assists. Gionta has scored in six consecutive games.
Harvard goaltender J.R. Prestifilippo made 26 saves. Boston College netminder Andy McLaughlin made 14 saves, raising his record to 4-0-0 this season.
Game Notes: It was the Eagles' second consecutive overtime game (and in four days)... The last time BC had consecutive overtime games was in in the third week of November in 1992... That week, the Eagles tied UNH on the 21st and tied St. Lawrence six days later... BC is 3-1-6 in their last 10 overtime games... Ironically, BC's last overtime win came against Harvard on November 28, 1995... In his two games against the Crimson, Marty Reasoner has two goals and three assists... The victory raises Jerry York's career record to 4-0 against Harvard... The Eagles are off to their best start since 1985-86...
