No. 7 Men's Hockey Defeats No. 1 Maine In Overtime, 4-3

ORONO, Maine - Senior forward Joe Rooney broke a 3-3 tie with 52 seconds remaining in overtime to lead seventh-ranked Boston College to a 4-3 Hockey East victory over Maine before 5,450 fans in Alfond Arena.

Rooney, who tied the score at 3-3 at 14:04 of the third period with his first goal of the game, received a pass from Benn Ferriero in the slot and beat Maine goalie Ben Bishop (28 saves) for the gamewinner.

Maine (8-2-1, 3-2-1 Hockey East) entered the third period with a 2-1 advantage and senior forward Michel Leveille increased the home team's lead with his second goal of the game just less than three minutes in the third period.

Senior captain Brian Boyle cut the Eagles' two-goal deficit in half at 7:14, reaching out for the rebound of a Rooney shot from the point and putting his backhand past Bishop.

Leveille scored the game's first goal to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead at 17:10 of the opening period. Leveille's goal came in a four-on-four situation.

Sophomore Nathan Gerbe evened the score with a power-play goal -- his third power-play goal and sixth goal overall -- 41 seconds later. Junior Dan Bertram and Boyle set up Gerbe, who skated into the zone and beat Bishop on a one-on-one situation.

Senior Mike Hamilton netted his second goal of the season at 11:47 of the second period to give Maine a 2-1 lead.

Junior goaltender Cory Schneider made 24 saves to earn his seventh win of the season.

BC (7-3-1, 4-1-1 HE) outshot Maine, 32-27, including a 4-2 edge in the extra session.

Game Notes: Rooney's two-goal effort marked his first multiple-goal game of the season and fourth of his career ... Boyle's assist on Rooney's game-winning goal marked his 100th collegiate point. The Hingham, Mass., resident, who recorded three points - one goal and two assists - against Maine, has 51 goals and 49 assists in 128 career games. He is the 65th player in BC hockey history to reach the 100-point milestone and the first since Chris Collins, who notched his 100th point on Feb. 3, 2006 at Massachusetts. Boyle also extending his point-scoring streak to three games, during which he has registered six points - two goals and four assists ... Boston College, which entered the third period trailing 2-1, scored twice in the third period and once in overtime to defeat the Black Bears, 4-3. That marked the time in 116 games that Maine entered the third period with a lead and lost.
