ORONO, Maine - Sophomore forward Johnny Gaudreau broke a 2-2 tie on the power play at 4:52 of the third period and senior goaltender Parker Milner stopped 28 shots, including all eight in the game's final frame, as top-ranked Boston College earned a 4-2 Hockey East victory over Maine before 4,733 fans in Alfond Arena.
Senior alternate captain Steven Whitney sealed the victory when he received a cross-ice pass from junior Bill Arnold (2 assists) with an empty-net score with 11.4 seconds left for the 4-2 final.
Freshman defenseman Michael Matheson also recorded two assists for the victors, who snapped a three-game losing streak in Maine's home building and captured their first Alfond Arena victory since Nov. 30, 2009 (4-3).
Boston College earned two one-goal advantages only to see each equalized moments later. Junior Kevin Hayesscored his third power-play goal in two games just 54 seconds into the middle period. Forty-six seconds later, Maine's Will Merchant tied the score at 1-1.
Later in the second stanza, junior Isaac MacLeod scored the first goal of his collegiate career on a seeing-eye wrist shot from the right point at 16:36 of the period. Maine forward Connor Leen redirected a loose puck with his foot past Milner and into the net just 27 seconds later.
Gaudreau's gamewinner, his third decisive tally through six games this season, was scored early in the third period - at 4:52 - and came with 28 seconds left on the man advantage. Danny Linell and Matheson, who notched the primary assist on MacLeod's goal, assisted on the Gaudreau's gamewinner.
BC finished the night 3-for-6 on the power play, marking the team's second straight game in which it scored three man-advantage tallies.
Maine junior goaltender Martin Ouellette recorded 19 saves in 58:47 to take the loss in his second start this season.
Boston College is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. when it hosts Massachusetts. The Minutemen tonight captured a 2-1 overtime victory over New Hampshire.
