No. 4 Men's Hockey Defeats UMass-Lowell, 5-2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Cam Atkinson and sophomore Chris Kreider each netted two goals to lead fourth-ranked Boston College to a 5-2 Hockey East win over UMass-Lowell before 3,322 fans in Kelley Rink.

The host Eagles led 2-0 after one period and 4-2 after two periods, before Kreider added an empty-net goal in the final minute of play.

Kreider opened the scoring at 10:08 and Atkinson doubled the BC advantage at 19:47.

Boston College tallied two special-teams goals - an Atkinson power-play goal at 4:50 and a Jimmy Hayes shorthanded goal at 8:54 - to raise the lead to 4-0. UMass-Lowell answered with two goals in 61 seconds to halve the BC margin. Freshman Derek Arnold scored a power-play goal at 9:03, and junior Matt Ferreira struck at 10:04.

The third period was scoreless until Kreider scored with 54 seconds remaining.

Senior John Muse made 15 stops to earn his 66th career victory, tying Matti Kaltiainen (2001-05) and Cory Schneider (2004-07) for second place on the school's list. UMass-Lowell freshman Marc Boulanger recorded 25 saves in 56:59.

Game Notes: Junior forward Paul Carey tallied two assists for his first multiple-point effort of the season; he has five points in the last five games ... Freshman defenseman Isaac MacLeod registered his first collegiate assist on Kreider's first goal of the game ... Jimmy Hayes' goal marked his second career shorthanded score; he last scored while skating shorthanded in a 5-3 win at New Hampshire in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Hockey East Tournament ... senior Brian Gibbons notched one assist and is now tied with assistant coach Greg Brown for 51st on the school's points list with 120. Gibbons, a Braintree, Mass. product, has 42 career goals and 78 assists.
