CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Kevin Hayes scored a pair of power-play goals and notched one assist to lead No. 1 Boston College to a 6-3 Hockey East victory over No. 11 UMass-Lowell in front of 4,226 fans at Kelley Rink.

The host Eagles took an early 3-0 lead and held off the River Hawks, who brought the score within one goal - at 3-2 midway through the middle period - to improve to 4-1-0 on the year.

Junior forward Bill Arnold (1 goal, 3 assists) netted the first goal of the game at 4:23 of the first period, deflecting a Teddy Doherty (3 assists) pass by the goaltender from just outside the crease. Hayes, who was involved in each of the team's first three scores, also assisted on the play.

Hayes then scored his first goal of the game at 18:41 of the opening frame on the power-play, putting home a rebound off another Doherty shot between the goaltender and the post.

Hayes gave the Eagles a three-goal cushion at 5:33 of the second period with his second power-play goal of the night. Arnold found Hayes in the slot who one-timed it into the back of the net.

UMass-Lowell's Michael Colantone got the visiting River Hawks on the scoreboard at 7:40 of the second period to make the score 3-1. His goal ended Boston College goaltender Parker Milner's shutout streak at 161:42 dating back to the third period of the team's 5-4 overtime win at Massachusetts on Oct. 19.

Derek Arnold pulled the River Hawks within one goal on his first goal of the year at 11:14 of the second period.

Boston College answered with consecutive goals of its own to build its lead to 5-2. Sophomore Johnny Gaudreau beat UMass-Lowell goaltender Doug Carr on a nifty backhander at 13:40 classmate Destry Straight netted his second of the season at the 17-minute mark of the middle stanza.

Both teams scored in the third period. UMass-Lowell's Scott Wilson put a shot past Milner at 4:39 and Boston College's Pat Mullane concluded the scoring at 16:25.

Milner recorded 25 saves to improve to 4-1-0. Carr stopped 23 shots and falls to 1-2-1.

Game Notes: Arnold's four-point performance marked career high ... Doherty and fellow freshman defenseman Michael Matheson each recorded their first career multiple-point performances. Matheson tallied his first two collegiate points (both assists) in the victory while Doherty notched assist Nos. 2-4 on the night ... defenseman Patch Alber blocked a game-high five shots ...
