LOWELL, Mass. - Senior alternate captain Steven Whitney scored the game's only goal early in the third period and senior goaltender Parker Milner registered 38 saves for his second straight shutout to lead top-ranked Boston College in a 1-0 Hockey East victory over No. 11 UMass-Lowell before 6,003 fans at the Tsongas Center.
Milner stopped 12 shots in the opening period, 15 in the second and 11 in the final frame for his second straight shutout and the sixth of this career. Boston College beat Northeastern last Saturday behind 26 saves from Milner.
Whitney scored the decisive goal at 3:17 of the third period, beating UMass-Lowell goaltender Doug Carr with a snap shot low to his blocker side from the high slot. Johnny Gaudreau and Pat Mullaneassisted.
BC was outshot 38-20 in the contest, including a 12-4 edge in the first period and an 11-5 advantage in the final frame. The Eagles killed all four River Hawk penalties in the game.
Carr registered 19 saves in 58:42 to take the loss.
The teams will conclude the home-and-home league series at Boston College's Kelley Rink on Sunday, Oct. 28. Face off is set for 4 p.m.

Game Notes: BC improved to 60-34-7 in the 101-game series between the teams and improved to 43-17-2 (.709 win percentage) under head coach Jerry York ... The consecutive shutouts of the last two opponents mark a first for BC since the Eagles blanked Air Force (2-0) and Minnesota-Duluth (4-0) last March at the 2012 NCAA Northeast Regional at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. ... John Muse was the last Eagle goaltender to backstop Boston College to a 1-0 win, doing so at New Hampshire on Mach 14, 2009 to clinch the two-game league quarterfinal playoff series ... Whitney has scored one goal in three (of four) games this season.
