Top-ranked Men's Hockey Defeats U.S. Under-18 Team In Overtime, 5-4

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore forward Benn Ferriero scored a power-play goal just more than two minutes into the overtime session to snap a 4-4 tie and lead top-ranked Boston College to an exhibition victory over the U.S. Under-18 Team in Kelley Rink on Friday.

The teams' traded the first eight goals of the game before Ferriero's game-winning score.

James vanRiemsdyk scored two goals, including the tying goal in the third period for the visiting U.S. Under-18 Team, which is led by former Boston College associate head coach Ron Rolston, who served two years (2002-04) on Jerry York's staff.

Five of the game's nine goals were registered in the opening frame. BC opened the scoring when sophomore forward Andrew Orpik netted a power-play goal at 4:55.

Team USA tallied the equalizer on C.J. Severyn's goal from Ryan Hayes at 9:11, but BC countered quickly when freshman Ben Smith scored less than 20 seconds later to give the host Eagles and early 2-1 advantage.

vanRiemsdyk scored his first goal - on the power play - later that period (at 14:27) before Brian Boyle put BC back up at 3-2 with a goal at 16:47.

Team USA's John Albert and BC's Nathan Gerbe traded power-play goals in the second period and vanRiemsdyk tied the score at 4-4 with 12:27 remaining on the clock to force overtime. Jimmy Hayes assisted on vanRiemsdyk's game-tying goal.

Each teams' power-play unit netted three goals on the night.

BC junior goalie Cory Schneider registered 23 saves in the victory. Team USA's Josh Unice stopped 33-of-38 shots.

The Eagles outshot the U.S. Under-18 Team, 38-27, including a 13-6 advantage in the third period of play.
