Hockey Blanks Ohio State, 1-0, in NCAA First Round
March 29, 2003
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Tony Voce's short-handed goal at 5:56 of the first period proved to be the gamewinner as No. 2 seeded Boston College (24-10-4) defeated No. 3 seeded Ohio State, 1-0, Saturday in the first round of the NCAA East Regional at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Voce's contributions were matched by sophomore Matti Kaltiainen, who stopped all 26 Ohio State (25-13-5) shots for his second career shutout.
While on the penalty-kill, junior J.D. Forrest found Voce at center-ice with a sky-high pass that forced Voce to leap into the air and pull the puck down. Voce streaked into the Ohio State zone on a breakaway and beat goalie Mike Betz with a shot to the top right corner. The goal was Voce's second short-handed tally of the season and the seventh of his career.
Boston College's blanking of the Buckeyes marked the program's first shutout in 56 NCAA Tournament games.
Betz made 20 saves in net for Ohio State.
The Eagles face top-seeded Cornell Sunday at noon with the winner advancing to the NCAA Frozen Four. The last meeting between the two schools was a 5-2 BC victory on December 7, 1993. The Eagles have won their last seven contests against the Big Red.
Sunday's game will be televised live on NESN. Tickets are available through the Dunkin' Donuts Center box office.
