Men's Hockey Beats Providence, 6-3
March 13, 1998
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College freshman forward Mike Lephart scored two first-period goals and BC rode an early lead to a series-clinching 6-3 win over Providence in the quarterfinal round of the HOCKEY EAST Tournament at Kelley Rink.
The victory, coupled with the Eagles 4-3 win over the Friars on March 12, advances Boston College to the tournaments semifinal round. The Eagles will meet an undetermined opponent at the FleetCenter in Boston on Friday, March 20.
Lephart netted the games first two goals -- at 11:26 and 14:24 of the opening period -- to give the Eagles an early edge. Providence's Josh MacNevin cut the lead in half at 17:49, before BC junior Andy Powers closed the first-period scoring at 19:28.
The score remained 3-1 until BC junior Chris Masters netted a 4-on-4 tally at 4:59 of the third period. Sophomore Jeff Farkas increased the hosts advantage to 5-1 with a power-play goal at 11:12.
Providence used goals by Mike Omicioli and Jon Coe to narrow its deficit to 5-3, but BCs Matt Mulhern secured the victory with an empty-net tally in the final half minute.
BC freshman Scott Clemmensen earned his 20th win in net, making 19 stops. Providence freshman Boyd Ballard made 41 saves.
