Hockey Falls To Boston University In Beanpot Championship, 2-1, In Overtime
Feb. 13, 2007
BOSTON (AP)-- John Curry stopped 37 shots and Brian McGuirk scored 5:06 into overtime Monday night to lead Boston University to a 2-1 victory over Boston College.
The Terriers (16-5-8) had been 0-2 against BC in overtime in the title game, but John McCarthy helped end that little slump when he won a faceoff in the BC end and tipped it to McGuirk, who put the puck under BC goalie Cory Schneider's arm and into the net.
The Terriers beat BC (16-11-1) last year, but the Eagles went on to the NCAA Frozen Four before losing to Wisconsin in the national title game.
Sophomore forward Nathan Gerbe scored for the Eagles, and Schneider made 24 saves.
BU took the lead just 2:33 into the game when Brett Motherwell tried to clear the BC zone but instead hit Brian Boyle on the skate. Eric Thomassian picked up the puck up and passed it across the net to Chris Higgins for the goal.
BC tied it two full periods later, at the 2:40 mark of the third, when Anthony Aiello's shot deflected into the center, Gerbe grabbed it, pulled it over to his backhand and beat Curry on his glove side.
BU nearly won with 3:43 left in regulation when Kenny Roche backhanded a rebound behind Schneider, who fell backwards to freeze the puck. The goal light went on, but the referee waved it off and a replay confirmed that the puck never crossed the goal line.
BC had a similar chance with 9.3 seconds left, when Benn Ferriero put the puck behind Curry. The puck bounced around and away from the net, and a review confirmed that it never crossed the line either.
