BOSTON - Sophomore Nathan Gerbe scored the game-winning goal in a short-handed situation and senior captain Brian Boyle recorded an empty-net goal and one assist to lead 15th-ranked Boston College to a 3-1 victory over Harvard in the first round of the 55th annual Beanpot.

Boston College (15-10-1) will play Boston University for the tournament title next Monday in TD Banknorth Garden.

Junior goaltender Cory Schneider made 20 saves to earn his 15th win of the season.

Harvard scored the game's first goal at 8:12 when defenseman Dylan Reese registered his fifth goal of the season.

BC sophomore Benn Ferriero (one goal, one assist) evened the score on his 13th goal of the season at 17:27.

Gerbe's goal, which came off a backhand at 6:22 of the second period, marked his fourth short-handed of the season.

Boyle recorded the empty-net score - his 13th goal of the year - to seal the victory at 19:41.

BC outshot Harvard, 32-21, including a 13-5 advantage in the third period.

Harvard goalie Kyle Richter recorded 29 saves in the losing effort.
