Boston College Players Lead Team USA at IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Three Boston College players -- sophomore forward Jeff Farkas (Williamsville, N.Y.), sophomore defenseman Mike Mottau (Avon, Mass.), and freshman forward Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y.) -- led the United States at the 1998 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Hameenlinna, Finland.
For the second consecutive year, Farkas led Team USA (4-3) in scoring. Farkas had 10 points, including a team-high six goals. Farkas' second-period game-winning goal on January 3 against Sweden secured a 4-3 U.S. victory and fifth place in the tournament. Gionta was second with 8 points (5 goals, 3 assists), while Mottau was fourth (4 points).
One memorable moment involving Boston College occurred on December 26, when the Eagle trio combined for five goals, including two each by Farkas and Gionta, in an 8-2 victory over Kazakhstan.
All three players will return to action for the 10th-ranked Eagles (11-6-2) on January 9 against top-ranked Boston University at Kelley Rink (7 p.m.).
