Marty Hughes Earns HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - For the second consecutive week, a Boston College freshman earned HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week honors. Defenseman Marty Hughes (Hicksville, N.Y./Lawrence Academy) captured the honor for the week ending October 19, joining forward Brian Gionta (the October 12 recipient).
On October 17, Hughes scored the game-winning goal with 3:47 left in the third period to lift Boston College to a season-opening victory over Bowling Green. Hughes' first collegiate goal came just 1:18 after the Falcons tied the score, 2-2.
Hughes came to Boston College after playing one season (1996-97) at Lawrence (N.H.) Academy and three (1993-96) at St. Mary's in Manhasset, N.Y. At both places, he led his teams to league and state championships. Last season, Hughes earned Boston Globe All-Scholastic honors. This past summer (August 1997), he participated in the U.S. Junior National Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Boston College (1-0) will travel to South Bend, Ind. on Friday, October 18 to face Notre Dame. The Irish are 3-0 and coming off a two-game weekend sweep of St. Cloud State. The Eagles lead the all-time series, 10-7.
