Brian Gionta Earns HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week Honors
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman forward Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y.) earned HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week honors for his fine play in the Eagles' 10-0 exhibition game victory over the University of Ottawa on October 11.
Gionta, playing on a line with junior Marty Reasoner (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore Tony Hutchins (Wolfeboro, N.H.), scored one goal and assisted on four others. The line combined for six goals and seven assists in the victory.
Gionta came to Boston College after two successful seasons with the Niagara Scenics of the Metro Toronto Hockey League. The 1996-97 MTHL Player of the Year, Gionta led the Central Division in scoring with 144 points (63 goals, 81 assists) in 56 games.
Boston College will open the regular season at home on Friday, October 17 versus Bowling Green. Game time is 7 p.m. Both teams received votes in the U.S. College Hockey OnLine/AP Preseason Poll, which was released on October 6. The Eagles had six votes, while the Falcons received three.
