Mike Mottau Earns Rookie of the Year Honors
Boston College freshman defenseman Mike Mottau (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) will be presented the George C. Carens Rookie of the Year Awards at the annual New England Hockey Writers' Association Banquet on Tuesday, April 8 in Saugus, Mass. The award recognizes the top newcomer in the six-state region.
Mottau collected 23 points on five goals and 18 assists in 1996-97. He was one of only seven Eagles to play in all 38 games this season. Mottau finished tied for the team lead in assists by defenseman and ranked second among Boston College blue liners in goals and points.
This marks the second-consecutive year that a Boston College player has claimed this award, as Marty Reasoner was the recipient in 1996.
"Mike Mottau had a tremendous freshman season and made key contributions to our team," head coach Jerry York said. "I am extremely proud that players from our program have achieved this honor in back-to-back seasons."
In addition, Mottau was selected to the six-player HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie team in a vote of the league's nine head coaches last month.
Boston College posted a 15-19-4 record in 1996-97 and advanced to the semifinals of the HOCKEY EAST Tournament.
