CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College football team got back on the field Friday for a pair of practices after their first day off since camp started on August 10 and bceagles.com caught up with junior Wes Davis to discuss the preseason.
Give us an update on the secondary:
"You have (DeLeon) Gause and (Donnie) Fletcher battling it out at corner. I think they are 50-50 right now and both of them are doing really well. I wouldn't even call it a battle - I think we just have two good corners. I think Roderick Rollins is holding down the fort at the boundary corner position. Isaac Johnson is really playing well. He's going to be someone we can win with. Marcellus Bowman is playing out of his mind at strong safety right now."
What is your relationship like with Marcellus?
"He's one of my better friends on campus. We get along really well. He and I are roommates together during camp. Since day one when he was a redshirt freshman and I was a freshman, we were the two safeties until guys like Ryan Glasper and Jamie Silva moved on. Now it's our turn."
How do you think the defense's success in the scrimmages will translate to the season?
"The defense is always ahead of offense, it doesn't matter where you are or what level. The offense is starting to move the ball a little bit now. We still have a lot of holes that we need to fix but it's nice to see a little bit of success."
Are there any young players that you have helped this preseason?
Which game are you looking forward to the most?
"'O' (Okechukwu Okoroha) is my backup safety and he's someone I try to help since he plays my position, but as a whole, I just try to be a leader out there. We have a lot of young guys who are getting their feet wet for the first time. You just have to make sure that all of the young guys are on the same page as you."
"The first game against Northeastern. I think that's the game you have to look forward to. You can't look past it."
What do you miss most about California?
"Wow...the weather. The weather is pretty consistent, especially in San Diego, and there are a lot of other things in California you're not going to get but there are a lot of things in Boston that I enjoy also."
What do you like most about Boston?
"BC football is the main attraction right now."
The Eagles will have two more practices - on Saturday and Sunday morning - before they conduct their third of four scrimmages on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
