CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The defense forced three turnovers and returned an interception for a touchdown in football's second intrasquad scrimmage Wednesday night at Alumni Stadium.

"There was improvement," head coach Frank Spaziani said. "We're inching along and we've got to improve by a foot. But they are working hard."

Freshman Andre Lawrence provided the score for the defense with a 34-yard interception return. Senior Marcellus Bowman added the other interception while junior Damik Scafe recovered a fumble. Bowman also added five tackles in the secondary.

The defense was able to sack the quarterback five times on the evening, each coming from a different player. Scafe, sophomore Dominick LeGrande, seniors Nick Rossi and Jim Ramella, and sophomore Kaleb Ramsey each got to the QB in the backfield.

Freshman Luke Kuechly led all defenders with seven tackles.

Freshmen David Shinskie and Michael Marscovetra saw a bulk of the time behind center for the offense. Shinskie finished the scrimmage 9-for-16 for 124 yards and an interception. Marscovetra went 6-for-11 for 43 yards and also threw a pick.

Freshman Rolandan Finch was the biggest gainer on the ground, rushing for 64 yards on 12 carries with a long of 48 yards. Sophomores Josh Haden and Montel Harris combined for 58 yards on 18 carries while senior Jeff Smith punched in the only touchdown of the day on offense.

Senior Rich Gunnell had a pair of big catches for 31 and 38 yards and finished the night with four receptions for 66 yards. Classmate Justin Jarvis also caught four passes for 49 yards with a long of 37.

The Eagles will enjoy a day off tomorrow and will participate in picture day in the morning. BC gets back on the field for another double session on Friday in preparation for its third scrimmage on Sunday afternoon.
