Ben Albert Named Assistant Football Coach

Jan. 4, 2013

Ben Albert has been named defensive line coach at Boston College, according to an announcement made by head coach Steve Addazio.

Albert, who brings 17 years of coaching experience to the Heights, joins the Eagles after spending the previous two seasons as the outside linebackers coach at Temple under Addazio. Prior to his stint with the Owls, Albert worked as an assistant defensive line coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010 and served as associate head coach and linebackers coach at Delaware from 2006-09. Albert has also spent time working with the defensive line and linebackers at Richmond (2004, 1997-2000), Massachusetts (2003, 1995-96), and Rutgers (2001-02) under current Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano.

"Ben Albert played his college football at Massachusetts and has coached all through New England and the East Coast," Addazio said. "He's got great pro experience with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he worked with one of the top defensive line coaches. He's a great recruiter with great energy and a great teacher. We welcome him and his family to Boston College."

This past season at Temple, Albert helped guide true freshman LB Tyler Matakevich to Big East Rookie of the Year honors as he totaled 101 tackles during his freshman campaign. In 2011, the Owls ranked third nationally in scoring defense, and senior LB Tahir Whitehead earned All-MAC honors before his selection in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.

While serving as associate head coach at Delaware, Albert helped lead the Blue Hens to the FCS title game in 2007. Albert also contributed to Atlantic 10 titles while at Massachusetts (2003) and at Richmond (1998, 2000).

During his second stint as a coach at Massachusetts Albert recruited fellow Paterson, N.J., native and current New York Giants WR Victor Cruz to UMass.

A 1994 graduate of Massachusetts, Albert captained the Minutemen as a senior and played nose guard and defensive tackle at UMass from 1990-94.
