Senior place-kicker leads ACC and ranks fifth nationally in career field goal percentage (.820)

At BC: One of the top returning kickers in the BIG EAST...will be relied on to provide consistent a redshirt freshman, he began his varsity career in fine fashion, ending the Hawaii game with a 42-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 24-21 win ...booted a 38-yard field goal in the spring game.

1998 Season: Appeared in 11 games...handled all place kicking duties for the Eagles...finished second on the team with 65 points...was a perfect 32 of 32 in extra points and 11-for-17 (64.7 percent) in field goals...longest field goal was 53 yards against Miami...made two field goals in each of three games ? against Georgia Tech, Rutgers and Notre Dame.

1997 Season: Played in 10 of 11 games, missing the Rutgers game because of a right hip flexor injury...connected on 10-of-16 field goals for a percentage of 62.5...converted a season-long 40 yarder against Miami...made two field goals in each of three games -- against Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Syracuse; accounted for all of the Eagles' points against Cincy... kicked the second game-winning field goal of his young career, converting a 35 yarder with 1:31 remaining in the fourth quarter to give BC a 22-21 win over Pittsburgh...connected on 22 of 23 PATs, including a 5-for-5 day against Miami...finished second on the team in scoring with 52 points, two points behind Mike Cloud.

1996 Season: Made his varsity debut a memorable one...he booted the opening kickoff of the ?96 season into the Hawaii end zone for a touchback and then ended the game with a 42-yard three-pointer (his third of the game) to give the Eagles a thrilling 24-21 victory...he hit 16 field goals during the year, one shy of Brian Lowe's single-season record of 17 set in 1986... also converted 19 PATs to finish with 69 points; tied for third in the BIG EAST with 6.9 points per game...he hit field goals of 44- and 45-yards at Pittsburgh, and converted on tries of 41- and a career-high 48-yards vs. Notre Dame...he suffered a serious kidney bruise when he was struck by an Irish player after the 41-yard goal, and was hospitalized for five days...he did not play in the final two games of the ?96 campaign because of the injury.

1995 Season: Redshirted.

High School: Earned All-Eastern League honors as a senior kicker at Mira Mesa High School...was also a All-CIF (County) Coaches selection as a senior...successfully converted 12-of-19 field-goal attempts, including a 46-yarder, as a senior; had five of his kicks blocked; was perfect on his attempts inside the 40...also kicked a 46-yard field goal as a sophomore...played for head coach Brad outstanding soccer player who made the U-17 and U-20 Soccer National Team Player Pools.

Personal: John Luca Matich, born October 15, 1977...enrolled as an English major in the College of Arts & Sciences...was a three-time member of the San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic Team...John is the youngest of Nancy and Branko Matich's three children.
